Walking in the Light

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
— 1 John 1:5-7

We are currently in the process of painting our living room. With this project comes the task of painting samples on our walls to see what we like best. Some of the colors we tried were really dark, and interestingly, changed the mood of the room.

The Bible contains a number of verses that deal with darkness. The verses usually contrast darkness and light. In John 3:19-21, it reads, "...the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the Light." Turn on the news or try watching a movie today; the darkness that pervades our culture is making today's world seem more and more like the days of Noah before the flood.

But as Christians, we do have a hope. In 1 John 1:5-7 it reads:

This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
— 1 John 1:5-7

Going back to my painting story, today's culture is like a room that is painted black. If you turn a light on in that room, it appears really bright. If we were to paint that same room beige and then turn the light on, it wouldn't appear as bright. Likewise, as the world gets darker, our lights as Christians should get brighter.

How is your light shining?
