Keeping It Simple

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life
— John 3:16

I like keeping things simple. Today's devotional will deal with John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

If you're a Christian, this is probably the first verse you memorized. It's a message of hope that's easy to understand, the type of verse that Billy Graham would use at a crusade. God sent his son to die on a cross for our sins. It's the greatest gift of all time, nothing will ever compare to it.

But why? We might not like to admit it, but we are sinful. As humans, we have a habit of belittling our sins and pointing out the sins of others. In Romans 3:23, For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." When Jesus died on the cross, he took away our sins and made us whole.

But we have to make a choice. We have to believe in him.

John 3:16 requires action on our part. When we choose (action) to put him first in our life, we become a new person, a new creation.

The devil believes that there's a God. My neighbor, who may be a good person, may believe that there's a God. But has my neighbor made the choice to believe in God? Have you made the choice to believe in God? It's the most important question that you will ever have to answer.
